PCCN · Compared with CCRN

PCCN vs CCRN: two exams, two kinds of patient

PCCN vs CCRN comes down to how sick your patients are. The PCCN is for adults who are acutely ill and moderately stable, with potential to become unstable; typically 1 nurse to 3 or 4 patients; the CCRN is for patients who are critically ill and unstable; typically 1 nurse to 1 or 2 patients. Both come from the same certification body, and eligibility depends on how sick your patients are, not on the name of your unit.

Side by side

PCCN vs CCRN, side by side

Both credentials belong to AACN Certification Corporation, the certification arm of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. They share a structure and differ in the patient. The CCRN column is described rather than quoted: its numbers are set and changed separately, so read them on AACN’s CCRN-or-PCCN guidance before you rely on them.

Fit

Which one fits your patients

Step-down, PCU and telemetry nurses

The PCCN is written for you. Its test plan sits on your patients: the chest pain workup, the new atrial fibrillation, the COPD exacerbation on BiPAP, the post-PCI groin, the sepsis screen that turns positive at 0300. You are studying what you already see on shift.

Float pool and mixed units

Split your hours by patient, not by unit. A nurse who floats between ICU and step-down can meet one set of hours and not the other. Check the PCCN hour routes against the patients you actually had.

Planning to move to the ICU

Take the PCCN now if you qualify now. It matches the job you have; the CCRN can follow once your critical care hours exist.

Harder?

Which is harder, PCCN or CCRN?

Neither exam is easier in the abstract. The harder one is the one that does not match your patients. AACN publishes each exam's pass rate by year, so compare dated figures only. For the PCCN, 70.1% of first-time candidates passed in 2025 (3,321 tested).

  1. 1Scope

The CCRN reaches into the unstable end of care: the devices, drips and monitoring of an ICU. The PCCN leaves pulmonary artery catheters, IABP, ECMO, CRRT and ICP monitoring out of its core and asks what you do for a patient who could become unstable.

  2. 2Shared ground

Both are built on the AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care, and both spend a share of the exam on caring and ethics. On the PCCN that share is Professional Caring and Ethical Practice, 20% of the exam.

  3. 3Your shifts

A step-down nurse sitting the CCRN studies ICU content they rarely touch. An ICU nurse sitting the PCCN still needs hours that AACN counts as direct care of acutely ill adults; check how yours count before you apply. The exam that fits your patients is the shorter study.

Both

Can you hold both?

Yes, you can hold both. They are separate credentials, so each has its own application, its own exam and its own renewal date. Holding the PCCN does not exempt you from any part of the CCRN.

Moving from PCCN to CCRN

Your PCCN is valid for 3 years, counted from the first day of the month you pass, whatever unit you work on next. If you move to the ICU, look at the PCCN renewal hours before that date: 432 hours of direct care of acutely ill adults in the 3-year period, 144 of them in the final 12 months. Ask AACN how your new hours count before you assume they do. Short of them, AACN has an inactive status for nurses who cannot meet the hours.

FAQ

Questions nurses ask

What does PCCN stand for in nursing?

Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN). CCRN is the critical care credential from the same body, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

Should a step-down nurse take the PCCN or the CCRN?

The PCCN, as long as your hours are on moderately stable, acutely ill adults. The CCRN expects hours on critically ill patients.

Do you need the PCCN before the CCRN?

No. They are independent: neither is a prerequisite for the other, and you can sit either one first if you meet its hours.

What study materials are available for the PCCN exam?

AACN sells its own practice exam; no prep product is required. On this site: a free PCCN practice test weighted like the test plan, and the PCCN study guide, ranked by exam weight.
