About Brain Sheet

Brain Sheet is an independent PCCN study site, with no connection to AACN Certification Corporation, the certification arm of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, which owns and runs the exam. That matters for one practical reason: AACN sells its own online PCCN practice exam and review course, and states that it does not approve, endorse or require any prep product. Nothing here, and nothing anyone else sells, is required to sit the PCCN.

Who

Who makes Brain Sheet

Brain Sheet is an independent study site. Its buttons lead to a PCCN app because the practice questions here come from that app's question bank, and the site is built around it. There is no named author on these pages, and that is deliberate: we will not invent a nurse educator with a photo and a list of letters. What you can check is the work itself, so this page explains how it is done.

The site is built around one idea: the exam is Clinical Judgment 80% and Professional Caring and Ethical Practice 20%, and the twelve test-plan areas are far from equal. Every page ranks topics by how many scored items they are likely to carry, so you can put your hours where the points are and leave the 2% areas for the last two weeks.

4 passes

How the questions are written and checked

Every question on this site comes from a bank that was rewritten and checked against the test plan for exams taken on or after February 6, 2024, built on the 2022 practice analysis. Four passes, in this order:

  1. Mapped to the test plan

Each item belongs to one of the 12 test-plan areas. Items whose whole point sat outside the current plan, such as vasoactive drip titration or pulmonary artery catheter numbers, were flagged for replacement rather than kept to pad a domain.

  2. Audited against current guidance

Keys were checked against current AHA/ACC, GOLD, ADA and Surviving Sepsis guidance. Items that rewarded outdated habits were rewritten: oxygen for every chest-pain patient regardless of saturation, or withholding oxygen in COPD for fear of the hypoxic drive.

  3. Answered before the key is shown

A separate pass answers every item without seeing the key. Where its answer and the key disagree, the item goes back for a rewrite, not a debate.

  4. Rationale review

Each explanation has to say why the keyed answer is right and why the most tempting wrong option fails. An explanation that only restates the answer is sent back.

What the site will and won't tell you

This is exam preparation for licensed nurses, nothing wider. The pages say what the PCCN tends to ask about a topic and where candidates lose points; they do not tell anyone how to treat a patient, and no page here is clinical advice. Your unit's protocols and current guidelines decide practice.

Where the numbers come from

  • Exam facts: items, time, pass line and fees come from AACN's own pages, each with a check date (last checked October 2026).
  • Volatile figures: fees, the pass rate and the testing window are printed with their year or “currently”, never as permanent.
  • Clinical numbers: targets and thresholds follow current published guidelines; when guidance changes, the affected items and pages change with it.

No tie

Independent of AACN

The PCCN belongs to the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and is administered by AACN Certification Corporation. Brain Sheet has never been reviewed by either of them, holds no agreement with them, and cannot see or change your application, your eligibility or your score. Passing our practice tests does not certify anyone; only passing the PCCN itself does.

For eligibility rules, fees and scheduling, the source that counts is the PCCN page on aacn.org. Our home page summarises it with dates, but AACN's page wins any disagreement.
